Saanjha Paani model being adopted in other villages as well

The Reverse Osmosis water purification system in Gidderbaha has completed one year of operation and has been a great success. 471 more villages in Malwa region will now follow the same system.

Chandigarh, Feb 18: As many as 471 more villages in Malwa region of Punjab comprising districts of Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar and Faridkot will be put on Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology by current fiscal year to provide clean drinking water to habitants.
Announcing this here on Wednesday, Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal said that the average expenses on 20 litres of water for a six-member family will be around Rs 60 per month.
An average cost on installation of RO machine is around Rs ten lakh, he said adding that “the model has not put any burden on the state government.”
‘Saanjha Paani’ a safe drinking water project was started in Gidderbaha Assembly constituency – the home constituency of Manpreet – last year.
“Fifty-seven RO machines have been put in place in equal number of villages in Gidderbaha last year,” he said adding that at present there were 1.5 lakh users in the constituency.
The machines are being installed by Tata group of companies, he said adding that for the requirement of entire village 1500 litres per hour of clean drinking water is sufficient. He said that the RO system had penetrated in 66 per cent of total 4 lakh population in Gidderbaha constituency.
Singh said that the RO system is also being installed in villages in Rohtak and Jhajjar in neighbouring Haryana.
The RO technology is being put in place by ‘Naandi’ a social sector organisation in collaboration with the Punjab Government. Singh said that after the installation of RO system majority of population is free from diseases like Hepatitis A and E, Typhoid and Diarrhhoea.
He said that for the expansion of the project in 471 villages a provision of rs 25 crore had been made to install RO systems.
